Fitted Storage Ideas for Small Rooms and Awkward Spaces
Practical checks before you plan the work.

Fitted storage works best when it solves a specific problem. A deep cupboard that is hard to reach, or a wardrobe with too little hanging space, can waste as much room as an off-the-shelf unit. Begin with what needs storing rather than a wall of identical doors.
Measure objects as well as the space
List the clothes, books, equipment or household items the unit will hold. Check their sizes and how often you need them. Everyday items should be easy to reach; occasional storage can sit higher up. Allow for skirting, sockets and uneven walls when measuring an alcove in an older home.
Choose the opening method carefully
Hinged doors need clear space in front of them. Sliding doors can help in a narrow room but do not expose the entire cupboard at once. Drawers may be easier to use than a deep shelf. Test the arrangement against the bed, sofa or desk before deciding a full-depth unit fits.

Specify materials and the final finish
Ask what the visible doors, shelves and carcasses will be made from. Painted joinery, veneered boards and solid timber have different finishing requirements. Confirm whether painting, handles, soft-close fittings and the treatment of cut edges are included. A photograph of a cabinet is not a complete specification.
Keep services accessible
Do not hide a ventilation grille, electrical accessory or service access point behind permanent storage. Discuss how the unit will be fixed and what the wall can support. Around a radiator, agree how heat can circulate and how maintenance will be carried out without dismantling the whole unit.

Agree details before manufacture
Confirm overall dimensions and the internal arrangement before materials are cut. Include shelf positions, hanging rails and the direction doors open. Check how pieces will reach the room through stairs and doorways. Small decisions made now can prevent expensive changes after installation.
An alcove needs more than an overall width
Measure at more than one height and consider the depth of skirting and any uneven corners. Decide whether the unit should sit within the alcove or project slightly into the room. Check the intended shelf loads with the carpenter; a long display shelf and a shelf full of books may need different support details.
A practical way to finalise the design
Prepare a sketch showing what belongs in each part of the unit. Add the size of the tallest object and any equipment needing a cable route. Ask to confirm handles, hinges and shelf adjustment before manufacture. If painting happens after fitting, establish who will prepare and finish the edges where the joinery meets the wall.
Your checklist before work starts
- List what needs storing.
- Check door and drawer clearances.
- Agree materials, ironmongery and painting.
